Laparoscopic Obesity Surgery

Laparoscopic obesity surgery is a revolutionary procedure which is performed by specialists in India. The work that it does is similar to the traditional surgeries. The one major difference between the traditional/open surgery and the laparoscopic surgery is that instead of being performed through an incision extending from the lowest aspect of the breastbone to below the navel, it is performed through several smaller incisions each measuring about an inch or less in length. These incisions help your surgeon to insert long thin surgical tools like especially designed staplers and laparoscope inside the belly. The laparoscope connected to a video camera is inserted into the abdominal cavity and the inside of the abdominal cavity is visualized on video monitors. The surgeon performs the surgery by watching the video monitor.

Major Laparoscopic Surgeries performed in India are

Laparoscopic Sleeve gastrectomy: This involves making five or six small incisions in the abdomen and performing the procedure using a video laparoscope and long instruments that are inserted through these small incisions. During the surgery, about 75% of the stomach is removed leaving a narrow gastric tube or “sleeve”. This short operative time is an important advantage for patients with severe heart or lung disease.

Laparoscopic Gastric bypass: Your surgeon uses staples to divide your stomach into a small upper section and a larger bottom section. And then connects a small part of your small intestine to a small hole in your pouch. The food you eat will now travel from the pouch into this new opening and into your small intestine. As a result, your body will absorb fewer calories.

Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric banding: The surgery is done using a tiny camera that is placed in your belly. It allows your surgeon to see inside your belly. Your surgeon will make 4 to 6 small cuts and insert surgical tools and a camera through the incisions. The doctor will then wrap a device (band) around the upper part of your stomach to form a ring.
